Cool street art to check out in Karakol

Share

In a little town where most travellers either relax here for a day or two before going on hiking trips or skiing trips, it’s easy to overlook or not see unexpected talented artwork.

Step off the main Toktogula street and you’ll find some hidden artwork that is being slowly eroding away by time and the elements.

A few of them are by an artist (possibly group) called “Let’s Color” and maybe some other artists as well (but hard to know as not all have a signature on them). If you love art, take a moment to appreciate some nice artwork – it won’t take long in a small town like Karakol.

Here are some cool pieces of street art to find and check out in Karakol.

Handle with care

There is a lack of proper recycling programmes in Kyrgyzstan which is unfortunate, given how beautiful the nature is in the country.

This mural re-emphasises the need to handle planet Earth with care and gentleness.

Boy and girl running away together

Not far from Karakol Lighthouse cafe, there is a cute mural of a Kyrgyz boy and a girl running with beautiful flowers in their hands, looking free and happy. Defnitely one to make you smile!

Snow leopard

This mural is of a snow leopard, a rather elusive (and endangered) animal somewhere in the remote areas of Kyrgyzstan. The artwork has seen better days – the paint is peeling off. I hope you get to see it before it is gone forever, unlike the actual snow leopard (I hope!).

Mountain Goat

Directly opposite the mural of the snow leopard is an equally amazing and newer-looking mural of a majestic-looking mountain goat.

Free as a Bird

There are many ways to describe this mural but “free” and “beautiful” come to mind! This artwork features a Kyrgyz woman in Kyrgyz attire (The conical ‘shokulo’ hat is prominent and majestic) and feeling as free as a bird. It’s my favourite art piece in Karakol and definitely worth seeing.

Special mention:
Studio Ghibli love

Along Toktogula road, you will see a random, out of place wall with some unexpected Studio Ghibli characters such as No-Face and Totoro. It’s slowly fading away so take a moment to appreciate it then take a photo if you wish.

That’s some of the top amazing street art to be discovered in Karakol. I’m sure there are other great ones that I have missed or have yet to be made by talented street artists in this small Kyrgyz town.
