Kyrgyzstan is an affordable place to travel to and splurge like there’s no limit to your bank account. But if you’re anything like me, you might still be a tight-ass budget-conscious nevertheless!

There are still things you can see or do without spending a single Kyrgyz som. Sure, there will be a lot of walking to see these free things but hey – walking is a great way to see the city and you’ll often find unexpected things along the way.

Here are the top recommended things you can do for free in Bishkek.

Visit Oak Park

There are many landmarks to see around this area so taking time out at Oak park is a good way to chill for a moment.

Oak park is relaxing to stroll around and features an open-air sculpture exhibition with around 90 sculptures, some dating back to 1984. There are some pretty cool sculptures worth taking a photo or two.

Osh Bazaar

Get amongst the locals at this often chaotic market where you will discover what local delicacies people offer and buy amidst the pushing and frenzy of boisterous voices yelling the latest special offers.

Food here (especially fruit and vegetables) can be cheaper than supermarkets so stock up here if you need to.

Note: Be careful with your belongings here as there can be pickpockets around.

Visit art galleries

There are several nice art galleries in Bishkek that feature some stunning and local art that is worth seeing if you have the time and interest in art.

Two such art galleries are:

Gallery M

Located upstairs in a building on the corner of Manas Avenue and Chuy Avenue, this gallery is small but beautiful. It has an aura of a beautiful art studio with the paintings to match it.

Kyrgyz Artists Union Exhibition Hall

It’s easy to miss this small unassuming building in the middle of Oak park but if you find it, you’ll find a small hall full of great artwork from local artists, along with some souvenirs available to purchase.

Explore local street art

In every city I go to, I always hunt for some cool street art and Bishkek is no exception.

There is some great street art around the greater city centre – if you’re an art lover, they’re worth seeing. Get your camera ready – these pieces of street art won’t last forever.

See Soviet artwork and architecture

Bishkek is a Soviet city and you will be reminded of it by the unique architecture and artwork scattered throughout the capital, ranging from drab grey slabs of concrete to a UFO-like building.

Seeking out the different Soviet architecture is a way to see the the city, especially by foot.

The mentioned free things to do will allow you to walk around the city and see some interesting sights. Bishkek can be interesting place if you keep your eyes out, along with talking to locals!
